"Initially, Vayssieres was assigned the task of mounting an exhibition to illustrate the extraordinary story of Equiano by librarians at the Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe to commemorate the year slavery was abolished, which was shown to visitors to the Guadeloupe Book Fair in 1998. But, captivated by the personality and unique experiences of Equiano, the artist decided to write and illustrate The Amazing Adventures of Equiano.
"The book recaptures the experiences of the hero, Equiano, as a slave merchant, wigmaker, chemist, seaman, writer and a learned man, who fought injustice all his life. Beginning from his early days at the Igbo community of Isseke, in 1756, the ten-year-old Equiano came across as a brave wrestler and hardworking lad. Paintings are used to illustrate his triumph in a wrestling match."
